Whoever he was he will have had it made clear to him in no uncertain terms, from the first day he was issued it, that what he is holding was never to be called a gun. He is holding a rifle.

Robert William Holmes and Ernie Ford. TWCMS: 2001.4972

Robert Holmes wears the cap badge of the Leicestershire Regiment and his uniform leather belt has the "S" shaped buckle of the 1908 Pattern equipment. Ernie's belt appears to be the 1903 Pattern so he may have joined the Army prior to the outbreak of war or been one of Kitchener's "New Army". Ernie's face looks rather drawn in this image while his friend's still has sparkle; was Ernie home on leave from the Front or recovering from an injury and posed with Robert who had yet see service? A fascinating photograph, one full of questions.

He is a corporal in the Northumberland Fusiliers ("Royal" status wasn't granted until the 1930's) and wears what looks like a campaign medal for overseas service. It is not a Boer War medal or a First World War medal, so could be one of the medals awarded for service in India.
