    His cap badge is that of the Essex Regiment. If the young man was a native of the North East then he was probably conscripted in to service, which would date this photograph to post 1916 when compulsory service was introduced. It would be good to know whether he survived the horrors of that "War to end all wars". . .

    This man's a pre-war regular, and the photograph dates circa 1905-14. He's dressed for 'Walking-Out', i.e. off duty out of barracks, and as such wears 'No. 1 Dress - Review Order', but in a paired down form to that worn for parades; so although he still wears the 'Full Dress' tunic and trousers, he has the coloured Forage Cap in place of the 'Full Dress' headdress, (which was the Home Service Helmet), and just a waistbelt. In 1914, 'Full Dress' items were withdrawn, khaki 'Service Dress' being worn for all occasions.
