An ‘ordinary’ war wedding at Prestatyn. Private Edward Albion George (Geoff Charles’ brother-in-law) and his bride Gladys face an uncertain future. For service wives, married life was not always the fairytale they expected and they often faced a long period of separation after the wedding day as the bridegroom returned to the front line.

Very often where there was a shortage of agricultural labourers soldiers training locally would help out during harvests. Pictured here are soldiers based in Montgomeryshire taking a break during potato harvesting at Llwydiarth.

Planning a wartime wedding when the bridegroom was serving in the Armed Forces was difficult. Brides often had to hurry to organise everything in time for when her fiancé could return on leave. With so many Welsh men serving in the Armed Forces, the presence of groups or regiments of soldiers at weddings was common. Here, soldiers formed a guard of honour as the bride and groom left the church grounds.

I am delighted to have found this photograph because Reginald Cooke was my boss in the early 1940's at Harrison and Sons Solicitors in Welshpool. This has brought back so many memories for me and I thank you for that. I also remember Harry Harrison and George Harrison who were senior partners and uncles to Reginald.
