Llandyssil Home Guard (Montgomeryshire) after a Church Parade at Llandyssil Parish Church

    In the event of a German invasion it was a requirement to ring the church bells. The Llandyssil, Montgomeryshire, Home Guard got the opportunity to practice their rapid response when the church bells were rung inadvertently in September 1940. This caused great alarm that day as church bells in nearby villages followed the example.

    To ensure that everyone was aware of the dangers in wartime, every person had to take part in the precautionary preparations, even in areas that were not obvious targets for the enemy. Here are the Air Raid Wardens of Llanfyllin in their decontamination suits. As can be seen, each man has a bell or rattle - the rattle warned of the danger of gas and the bell sounded the all clear. Wardens also had less dangerous duties such as checking that no lights were visible from outside buildings during the blackouts.
