Knitting items of clothing for the troops was a popular way of supporting the war effort. Newtown Women's Institute held a working party in Community House in the town in November 1939. The main centre of attention though was the Newtown's only male knitter, David Lewis. In this photograph he is seen wearing a 'balaclava' he made for the troops

Children often helped out with the salvage effort. In November 1939 these members of the 1st Newtown Scout troop used a horse and cart to collect waste paper from around the town.

I like how the smallest and youngest is left to hold the horse. Looking at this, it appears to have been photographed on High Street, outside The Buck Inn and Boots, facing the Market Hall.

What grabs my attention the most is the impish little lad in the front, with his stance, hand on the stack on the cart, and that sweet little look on his face. Priceless! This is a wonderful photograph.

This part of Newtown hasn't changed much since 1939, the bridge between the Pryce Jones building and Agricultural house is no longer there, almost everything else (including the train station building on the right) appears almost identical.
