Children often helped out with the salvage effort. In November 1939 these members of the 1st Newtown Scout troop used a horse and cart to collect waste paper from around the town.

I like how the smallest and youngest is left to hold the horse. Looking at this, it appears to have been photographed on High Street, outside The Buck Inn and Boots, facing the Market Hall.

What grabs my attention the most is the impish little lad in the front, with his stance, hand on the stack on the cart, and that sweet little look on his face. Priceless! This is a wonderful photograph.

Soldiers, sailors and pilots were not the only ones who fought in the war. On the Home Front the contribution of ordinary men and women was crucial in local defence efforts. Rules and safety precautions were established that everybody was expected to follow, and services such as the Air Raid Wardens and the Home Guard ensured that home defence procedures were properly carried out.

Cookery classes and food demonstrations, like this one were organised by the Ministry of Food. They advised people how to use home grown produce in the preparation of their everyday meals and how to improvise when it came to replacing the more exotic ingredients no longer available.
