Cookery classes and food demonstrations, like this one were organised by the Ministry of Food. They advised people how to use home grown produce in the preparation of their everyday meals and how to improvise when it came to replacing the more exotic ingredients no longer available.

Janet Bennet-Evans was the only woman to drive a crawler tractor in the Welsh Region of the Ministry of Supply (Tree Production). Many women worked in the forestry industry, some of them as wood measurers, stacking planks for drying, equipment maintenance, measuring cut wood, measuring and crosscutting poles for props, stripping bark and branches and loading wagons. They also did general work, pruning, felling and planting trees.

Fruit preservation was encouraged during the period of food rationing so that even wild berries and fruits were not wasted. However, jams had to be made with little or no sugar as it was rationed.
