Peter Kingsford remembers H L Beales as his PhD supervisor in the 1940s: 'The viva was a curious event. I went to meet Beales in his room, to which be brought the other examiner, Professor Court from Birmingham, but found the room completely bare because the cleaners had been in. Beales collected three chairs from the corridor and we sat in a Kafkaesque trio as they shuffled through the thesis asking me several questions. My replies were stupid becuase I had a bad headache. Shortly after I had withdrawn, Beales came out and said that if, for the purposes of vanity or for getting a job, I wanted to call myself Dr I could now do so. I apologised for my stupid answers but he said 'We all get nerves on these occasions'. I saw Beales once more when he was giving a lecture in the Old Theatre chaired by the famous historian R H Tawney, a friend of Beales', who fell asleep until Beales woke him. He died at the age of ninety-nine, regretting, I was told by his widow, not to reach a hundred. A great teacher.' Castlemaine Perkins is a brewery at 185 Milton Road, Milton, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It is a wholly-owned entity of the Japanese-controlled Lion company. Operations began in 1878 and continue today. Castlemaine Perkins is the home of the XXXX beer brand. In 1877, brothers Nicholas Fitzgerald and Edward Fitzgerald partnered with a Brisbane commercial firm to buy the site of a failing distillery and establish a brewery, named for the Fitzgeralds' existing Castlemaine Brewery.[1] They began to brew beer there in the following year and the brewery continues production to this day. The first beverage was called XXX Sparkling Ale.[2] In 1866, Patrick Perkins started the Perkins Brewery in Toowoomba. In 1872, he later extended his operations to Brisbane with the purchase of the City Brewery in 1872.[3] The company restricted its operations entirely to brewing by 1916.[4] XXXX was introduced with a new advertising campaign in 1924 after the brewery employed German brewer, Alois William Leitner.[2] The advertising included a depiction of a little man wearing a suit with a smile, a wink, and a boater hat. The so-called 'Forex Man' soon became one of the most recognized symbols in Queensland.[2] In 1928 (long after the death of Patrick Perkins in 1901), the Perkins brewing company was bought by the Castlemaine Brewery with the new company being known as Castlemaine Perkins Limited.[3] In March 1980, Castlemaine Perkins merged with Tooheys to form Castlemaine Tooheys.[5] Bond Corporation purchased Castlemaine Tooheys in 1985.[6] Castlemaine Tooheys was acquired in 1992 by Lion Nathan.
