The monument commemorates those who have served in the various conflicts in which Australia has been involved. The pedestal of the monument bears the cut and gilded names of one local soldier who was killed in action in the South African (Boer) War and the 277 who died in service or were killed in action in World War One. Commemorative plates for later conflicts have been added to commemorate those who died in service or were killed in action in World War Two, the Korean War, the Malayan and Borneo conflicts, and the Vietnam War. The monument was incomplete when it was first unveiled on ANZAC Day 1921, as the statue had not arrived from Italy. "In the presence of some 5000 people on the 30th July 1921, the magnificent marble statue erected by the citizens of Bundaberg and District to fallen soldiers was unveiled by Major- General Brand. The monument which is erected in the heart of the city is 16ft high surmounted by the figure of a typical digger, 7ft.6inches high carved out of a block of solid marble and made in Italy. The First World War Memorial is situated at the main intersection of Bundaberg on a traffic island consisting of alternating bands of grass and concrete running parallel to Bourbong Street. The height of the memorial complements the adjacent Post Office tower. The monument sits on a large trachyte and granite pedestal comprising a central recessed square pillar with engaged square pillars at each corner. The central pillar sits on a simply detailed trachyte base and is flanked by sections of banded stone. The central section of each face bears the cut and gilded names of one local soldier who served in the Boer War and the 277 who served in the First World Wars. Commemorative plates to later conflicts have been added to the pedestal. The corner pillars sit on trachyte bases and have small cornices surmounted by rusticated stone blocks from which red granite pillars rise. The whole of the pedestal is surmounted by a large frieze and cornice.[1] Above the cornice sits an octagonal two-stepped base of trachyte surmounted by a circular step. This forms a base for a red granite column with a marble Ionic order capital.[1] Surmounting the column is a marble digger statue, which is life-sized. The soldier stands with his head bowed and his hands are resting on a rifle which is reversed. He carries a backpack and his right leg is bent to create a relaxed stance. The front plaque bears a leaded ivy leaf motif, inscriptions and the names and details of the three Andrews brothers who lost their lives. The memorial is situated in the St Stephens cemetery, directly behind the Andrews family plot. Although privately owned, it is the focus of public ANZAC Day memorial services. * Constructed in 1891, Bundaberg Post Office is a significant regional postal facility and an integral part of the city’s historic central civic and administrative precinct, stemming from its rich history as one of Queensland’s great coastal ports. * l Bundaberg Post Office is an example of the work of Charles McLay under the aegis of Queensland Colonial Architect, George Connolly. * l The substantial frontage and landmark tower embody prosperity and future confidence in the city of Bundaberg, supported by successful sugarcane, mining and horticultural industries dating back to 1870s. Function * Bundaberg Post Office belongs to the second generation of Australian post offices built between 1870 and 1929. These offices generally incorporate separate components for the telegraph and postal functions in addition to quarters for the postmaster, and in this case integrated government offices. * Notably, the office space was occupied by Crown Lands Department Office and French Cable Co. * French Cable Co. began exchanging messages through the Vancouver via New Caledonia undersea cable in 1893, which terminated at the first floor of the post office. Building description * The building’s Victorian Italianate frontages are a fine representative example of large post office buildings of the period. * The six-level clock tower is set 45 degrees to the bulk of the building and its angle diagonal to the road alignment is of strong artistic merits. * A double-height arcade screens the principal street elevations. The ground floor arcade columns are square chamfered components with a suggestion of a Tuscan capital carried in the molding sustained across the stilted arcades on the ground floor of each flanking pavilion. * The upper level contains a verandah with sculpted cornice, Romanesque cast iron columns, and plain masonry pedestals interspersed with a cast iron lace balustrade. * The external walls comprise rendered brick with ruled ashlar finish to principal street elevations, rusticated banding to projecting pavilions and the clock tower, and tuck-pointed face brickwork to rear elevations.
