Two days later his brother fell at Vimy Ridge. Casualty Type:Commonwealth War Dead Grave/Memorial Reference:Plot 2. Row E. Grave 3. Cemetery:CORBIE COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION

Charles William Herbison was born in Hayton, Lanarkshire circa 1893 (1901 Census). His father, James, was a surveyor. 1911 Census, 18 years old, living with parents at 3 Malvern Street, Burton on Trent. Gazetted as a Second Lt to 3rd Bn Leicestershire Regt on 06 May 1911, and transferred to 1st Bn on 14 August 1914. 'D' Company commander at the time of his death. Brother was Private 3799 Ernest Newman Herbison, of the 4th (South African Scottish)Regiment, South African Infantry, killed in action on 19/09/1916 (born circa 1891 Hayton Lanarkshire 1901 Census). Ernest had married Ella Summers at Bordon camp on 06/11/1915. Ernest's photograph is also held by the IWM, see SeeErnest Herbison photo SeeCWGC Casualty SeeErnest Herbison marriage A third brother, Leslie James Herbison served with the Norfolk Yeomanry and the 4th Cavalry, Indian Army, and survived the war. He was gazetted 2nd Lt on 01 May 1917, and transfered to 2nd Reserve Regiment of Cavalry on 26 March 1918. (1901 Census, London Gazette & Medal Record Cards)
