F. O. Hellstrom was a North Dakota politician, a Democrat who was a delegate to the 1916 Democratic National Convention. He was also the warden of the North Dakota State Penitentiary.

pennylrichardsca: Thank you for your information about F. O. Hellstrom. I found a bit more by searching Google Books, where the Britannica Year Book for 1913 (p. 882) says that Frank O. Hellstrom, Democrat of North Dakota ran for governor of the state, but was defeated by the Republican candidate. Other books available such as the Annual Report of the North Dakota Public Service Commission (1906-1907) include correspondence from him signed as the Warden of the North Dakota State Peniteniary at Bismarck. We will add some more details when we update.

No "e" in Clancy. James Clancy was appointed warden of Sing Sing in July, 1913, at about the time that an arson fire damaged several of the prison workshop buildings. Official reports had slammed inhuman conditions at the prison -- blamed on the cramped and antiquated facilities (built in 1821), and not on the warden or his minions. Clancy, who had no prison experience, was overwhelmed, and tried to resign in October, 1913, then again in April, 1914, after having no luck in persuading the legislature to appropriate funds to ameliorate conditions.
