Accompanying note: "Long lines like this one are common in City Hall these days as an average of more than 200 people a day register to vote in the February City elections. So far this week about 835 people have registered. Yesterday alone 245 registered."

This is not the least interesting of many interesting images in this wonderful set. It is perhaps a reminder that the history of voting rights (and race relations in the South generally) was not entirely a history of violent conflict and confrontation. Yes their was a struggle but yes a great of what happened happened quietly and no not everyone's heart was stained by ill-will. It also reminds us that, like the history of the franchise for women, we know more about national and state level changes than we do about municipal and school board etc. level voting practices.
