Railroad Bridge over Tye River

  • Jeff Morfit said:
The southbound Crescent Limited was due through Nelson County at about the time that the bridge was washed out. Fortunately it was able to stop well north of the Tye River.

That's the Virginia Blue Ridge Railroad bridge, not the double track high bridge the Southern Railway lost just east of US 29 at the Village of Tye River.
  • Pete C said:
This is about 2 miles above route 29, it was a small logging railroad, not part the Southern RR. It joined the Southern at Tye River depot. This bridge is now part of a rail trail. The Piney river joins the Tye 100 yards or so above this bridge-just to the right of the photo. The big gap in the bridge was actually land, not bridge spans, and has been filled back in.

Bridge Out on Rt. 626

  • Pete C said:
rt 626 is the bridge on the left. To its right is the C&O (now CSX) railroad bridge built on the old stone canal aqueduct still standing. Note the actual train tracks washed off but still intact, to the right lower portion of the photo. the James river is 100 yards to the right.
