This type of pottery is generically known as Cantonese - Cantonese pottery is quite common and often comprises of brightly painted large vases (usually pairs). The Foo Dog finial is often seen on lids. From the looks of it, I'm guessing it's late 19th century but the mark on the base would confirm or refute that. The better quality vases shows exquisite detail in the painting and the dog image is finely moulded with sharp detail and well painted. 'Cantonese' pottery is still exported from China worldwide but most of the modern examples lack that quality, although are still attractive decorative pieces.

Is it possible that this image was made for an auction catalog? The vase has been moved to a location with a simple backdrop. Is there any record of an sale of the furnishings at Mount Juliet at the time?

Stuart Swiftly trying to distract everyone as I remove tag "Lion" and replace it with Foo Dog finial. (Move along, nothing to see here)

Slimdandy Hmm, that's a thought, though the McCalmont family bought Mount Juliet in 1914 and remained there until a few years ago...
