This is Vancouver. Grouse Mountain in the background. Stanley Park to the left. The Marine Building is the large building in the centre, with the prestigious Vancouver Club two buildings to the right. This photo is likely taken from the Hotel Vancouver, which was finished in 1939.

This is actually Coast Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii var. menziesii), not a Douglas 'Pine'. For more info, see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coast_Douglas-fir

Based on the angle of the photograph, this was taken of the rear of the first Hotel Vancouver, which faced Georgia and Granville. You can see the chimney on the far left of this building, reflected on the far right in this photograph: searcharchives.vancouver.ca/hotel-vancouver-corner-of-geo... Thus, I estimate this photo was taken from the vicinity of Burrard and Smithe. It is definitely taken from a higher elevation than the hotel; it might even be a bit further up Burrard, and/or back towards Thurlow. If we knew the lens that Notman used in this photograph, we could perhaps more accurately estimate the distance.

What a cool photo...she almost looks like a little doll standing in front of that tree! I too had my photo taken here many times as a child. Maybe there should be a pool for photos of this tree?!?

I also had my picture taken there- the first time I visited Vancouver, aged 10. When we moved there a year later, we used to visit this tree often. I can't believe it's being cut down now.
