This is actually Coast Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii var. menziesii), not a Douglas 'Pine'. For more info, see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coast_Douglas-fir

Based on the angle of the photograph, this was taken of the rear of the first Hotel Vancouver, which faced Georgia and Granville. You can see the chimney on the far left of this building, reflected on the far right in this photograph: searcharchives.vancouver.ca/hotel-vancouver-corner-of-geo... Thus, I estimate this photo was taken from the vicinity of Burrard and Smithe. It is definitely taken from a higher elevation than the hotel; it might even be a bit further up Burrard, and/or back towards Thurlow. If we knew the lens that Notman used in this photograph, we could perhaps more accurately estimate the distance.
