The elliptic wing planform...actually a "double ellipse" was designed to minimise induced (lift dependent) drag; the skewing of the ellipse was to get the local wing centre of pressure onto the unswept main spar ... this being a good thing for the structural design. This was based on the work of the German aerodynamicist Ludwig Prandtl whose work was published in 1934 just in time to contrbute to the Spitfire....nice case of international collaboration eh?

Thomas Golden was the proprietor of the Brown Jug Saloon, the brick building on the right in this photograph, from 1862 to 1866. His head bartender purchased the business in late 1866 and changed the sign adding his name, Augustus Cecil Couves. This photograph predates 1867. Thomas Golden left Victoria on a ship bound for San Francisco in which he tried to commit suicide by jumping overboard. He was rescued but ended up in a California asylum.
