Malta does not have, and never had, gondolas. Small hired transport boats in Malta are called Dghajsa (pronounced, Dice-a).

I think this should be labeled Valletta, the new (i.e 16th century) capital of Malta.

@LucyGraceBarber, I think it may actually be Senglea, looking from Valletta across the Grand Harbor.
Malta boasts this thoroughfare of stairs with shops and tall buildings on either side of the Narrow Way (LOC)

Nigel Herbert I work and have lived in Valletta, and I can assure you that whatever street this is, it is not as active as it once was. It's still lovely though.
