The Washington Herald., January 02, 1919, page 1, column 4 chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn83045433/1919-01-02/ed-... "The American transport Northern Pacific, with a cargo of human freight. 2.481 soldiers, many of them wounded, is sandbound in "ships' graveyard" off Fire Island, tonight, the plaything of the seas. Two lines have been placed aboard the ship and arrangements have been made to remove the passengers and crew in a breeches buoy should demand arise. Six destroyers and a transport of the United States Navy are standing by, to meet any emergency." The Seattle star., January 01, 1919, page 1, column 7 chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn87093407/1919-01-01/ed-... describes the situation more fully.

The sun., January 12, 1919, Section 3 Pictorial Magazine, Image 28 published a very similar photo chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn83030431/1919-01-12/ed-... S. also photo and article "20 VESSELS RUSHED TO STRANDED SHIP" in The evening world., January 02, 1919, City Edition, Image 2 chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn83030193/1919-01-02/ed-... and The evening world., January 03, 1919, City Edition, Image 3 chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn83030193/1919-01-03/ed-... The caption of this photo is apparently mistaken, since the Great northern would be the sister ship: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_Great_Northern_(1914)

Thanks for pointing out the naming error of the ship. We will make a note in the catalog records.
