Depew is a village in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 16,629 at the 2000 census. The name is derived from Chauncey Mitchell Depew, the President of the New York Central Railroad and former US Senator.

The photo was taken on June 9, 1911. That was the year in which Depew retired as U. S. Senator from New York, at the age of 85. Here he appears to be aboard a ship in the harbor, or perhaps on a ferry boat.

William Gibbs McAdoo (1863–1941) was Woodrow Wilson's first Secretary of the Treasury, serving from 1913 until 1918. In 1914 he married Wilson's daughter, Eleanor. A native of Georgia and graduate of the University of Tennessee, he had a business career in New York prior to his service in Wilson's cabinet, and after leaving the administration he eventually moved to California where he was elected to the U.S. Senate, serving a single term beginning in 1933. In February, 1914, the 52-year-old Secretary McAdoo dazzled social butterflies of Atlanta when he bounced around the dance floor in a demonstration of the tango -- the new (and scandalously tactile) craze from Argentina.
