This photo ran in he Sunday Oregonian. (Portland, Ore.), September 17, 1916 with the caption " Japanese Aviator Graduating at Tokosozawa [sic] Aerodrome. Japan is rapidly building up the aerial branch of her military force. The army aviation school recently graduated a large class of aviators at the Tokosozawa aerodrome near Tokio." oregonnews.uoregon.edu/lccn/sn83045782/1916-09-17/ed-1/se... This is likely a misspelling of Tokorozawa, the site of Japan's first permanent airfield and aviation school.

Art Siegel: Thanks for both linking these two related images with good source information and for catching the spelling error in the newspaper article! We will update the record description.

    Here's a matchbox cover celebrating the 2594th
  • Koichilo Watanabe said:
Please tell me about the caption. How the date was specified? It was written "昭和十二年 奉祝 建國祭" on the board. "昭和十二年" means 1937, 2597th imperial year. And one more question. "建國祭" meant the celebration of the building of Japan, 11th of February. I'm not sure what exact day this photo was taken, but it might not be 6th of March.

Launch of destroyer 30 -- Tokyo (LOC)

Mutsuki-class IJN Destroyer No. 30, upon launching on October 6, 1926, at Ishikawajima Shipyard, Tokyo. She'd be re-named IJN Nagatsuki (DD-30), in August 1928. Nagasutki would ultimately be holed, beached, and destroyed at Kolombangara in July 1943, during the Battle of Kula Gulf. See: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_destroyer_Nagatsuki_(1926)
