Aldgate East reconstruction

I assume that the date of 1946 came from the LT Museum, but it is wrong. The new Aldgate East station pictured here came into use in October 1938, so I suspect this was taken just prior to that.

On the header page for the collection it states The images in this set were taken from ZSPC 11/256: The Railway Gazette: Improving London's Transport (Special Number of the Railway Gazette) dated 1946

The date of 1946 is obviously the date of publication in Railway Gazette, but it cannot be the date the photo was taken. Aldgate East station was rebuilt on a new site and brought into use in October 1938. The rebuiling involved lowering the track through the station. While the work was going on the tracks were carried on a tressle. In this photo you can see the old track on the tressle in the background, with the new track at a lower level in the foreground. Thus, the photo must have been taken while the lowering of the track was in progress, so cannot be later than October 1938 and was probably not much earlier.

Hainault welded bridge

In 1935 the Transport Museum started a "New Works Programme". The work started in 1938 but was suspended when WW2 began. It recommenced in 1946. Development of the suburb of Hainault was begun in the late 1920s.
