This photograph was taken on either 1st or 2nd November 1900 when the Duke and Duchess of York were guests of Lord and Lady Llangattock at their residence at The Hendre. From left to right in the car are Sir Charles Cust (1864-1931) was equerry to the Duke of York. The pair had been friends for many years having served together as midshipmen on HMS Bacchante in 1881. Lord Llangattock Charles CS Rolls (in his oilskin driving coat) Duke of York, later King George V.

A great picture of a place I know well. Some of the buildings are still there, but the church in the background was bombed in WWII and demolished to be replaced by 'Peace Gardens'. In England streetcars are called 'trams'.

The "Westward Ho" was a paddle steamer built at Ayr in 1894. She served most of her life sailing between ports on the Bristol Channel. She even served as a mine sweeper during W.W.II. She was scrapped in 1946.

This photo was probably taken on Saturday 27 October 1900 after snow and rain had flooded the Tynemouth branch line. At Cullercoats station a train tried to get through the flood and was partially derailed. The passengers had to be rescued by boats that were brought to the station from the beach.

I think Cullercoats station has had problems with flooding in more recent years but never this bad I don't think. I've also seen another shot of boats on a flooded Cullercoats Station but looking in the opposite direction towards Tynemouth. This was also from early 1900s. If anyone knows of it please post a link here if that's possible. Everyone seems to be posing for the photographer in this shot (except the dog on the left)!
