The date was 9 June 1954.

The skull had been taken to Germany by the German colonial authorities after Mkwawa's death in 1898.

The white-turbaned figure by the tree in the centre is the Hehe Chief Adam Sapi Mkwawa. The building on the right is the specially built Mausoleum/Museum where the skull is kept.
