[Unidentified soldier in Confederate uniform] (LOC)

Since the man in this photo was a soldier of the Confederate Army, then did he go on to join the Union (US) Army after the Civil War had ended, if he had managed to survive the battles and remained fit for combat? Because shortly after the Civil War had ended, the US Government had resumed the wars against those Native Americans who belonged to the various nomadic tribes.
  • Jon (LOC P&P) said:
After surrender, the Confederate soldiers were to cease hostilities and return home. Some enlisted soldiers may have joined the Army afterward, and a number of Confederate officers did re-join the US Army after the war but most went back to civilian lives. Most Union soldiers also returned to civilian life after the war.

It's crazy seeing the Drummer Boy in comparison to the rest of the men... shows how young many of them were.

    posthumous promotion?

Robert D. McSween never returned home from the war, though he was decommissioned in 1863 in Knoxville. He was my great-great-great grandfather. We have never been able to locate his remains or find out what happened to him once he was decomissioned.

My name is Robert D. McSween (born Alexandria, LA in 1954). My relatives (two brotehrs) came to this country from Isle of Sky through Cape Fear in early 1800s. I am probably related to this soldier.
