    My late grandfather did this -- in fact not far from where this was taken, in Tyler TX. The club in the man's right hand is a "Brakeman's Club". There is a wheel on top of each car that controls the brakes, and the Brakeman's Club is wedged into the wheel to provide extra leverage. My grandfather lost his arm when his club slipped and he fell off onto the track in front of a boxcar, which then started to roll.

    I have read that after Missouri Pacific took control of the T&P, they replaced existing searchlight signals with this color light type. The searchlight signals had a single bulb and an internal mechanism for changing the color. Although popular on many railroads, MoPac didn’t care for the design. Thanks for posting.
