My late grandfather did this -- in fact not far from where this was taken, in Tyler TX. The club in the man's right hand is a "Brakeman's Club". There is a wheel on top of each car that controls the brakes, and the Brakeman's Club is wedged into the wheel to provide extra leverage. My grandfather lost his arm when his club slipped and he fell off onto the track in front of a boxcar, which then started to roll.

I'm thinking Mr. Richie had inside "help" in taking this photo (probably others as well), as no on-the-ground or on-the-train FREIGHT railroaders would be this clean after more than 5 minutes on the job! :-)
