It took a while, but the answer was staring me right in the face. On the largest file, you can just make out the serial number: 42-50414. "Gaw'Gia Peach" was a B-24H assigned to the 831st Bomb Squadron, 485th BG. On 10 August 1944 she crashed 15 miles south of Cerignola. Lib's weren't exactly the best design for a forced landing - and were particularly deadly when it came to ditching. I think this photo is connected to another in this stream which mentions "4 out of 10" survivors... www.flickr.com/photos/sdasmarchives/8092102382/in/set-721...

Wonderful image. Does anyone know of a website which identifies the insignia on these 18 footer sails? There are so many unidentified old photos of these great boats here and at the Powerhouse Museum. [hint @ ANMM to start one !]

beachcomber australia Hi Beachcomber, I don't know of a website but there is a wonderful book called 'Galloping Ghosts : Australasian 18 - footers 1890 - 1965' that has an index of vessels & their details including emblems. Many of the insignia were used by multiple boats so it can often be hard to distinguish individual vessels. Our curators have sifted through some of the WJ Hall images & identified where they can. Any input from the public of course is fabulous and perhaps an online index would be possible someday - it would certainly be useful!
