Well, you can see the airmen posing by their warplanes, and you can see the bombers flying in formation, and you can see them dodging the flak to get to the target, but only photos such as this one make you realize what warfare does to us. Enormous losses of capital investments take place in the blink of an eye. Where do you even begin sorting out a ruin like this one?

Westoe Colliery in the distance close to the coast. The massive head gear can be seen above the shaft and coal conveyors to the left. A mine which should never have closed..
