Another "odd" photo. The digit 5 indicates some kind of training unit but none is officially known for this aircraft. Taken to Africa onboard the vessel S/S Empire Liberty (19 Sep 1942) via Takoradi, Ghana (9 Nov 1942) assigned to 601 Sq in the desert and struck off charge 5 Jan 1943. This leaves a very narrow time frame for this aircraft to be with anything else than the 601st. Looking at some other ER27x aircraft, none really fits the bill either. I would welcome further input on this one. Stig

Actually I don't think it's one of the original Supermarine products. The Spanish airforce still had Spitfires on the inventory into the 1960s (if I remember correctly) and had re-engined them at some stage with something more modern than the Merlin. The bulge under the aircrafts' 'chin' is the giveaway. Spoils the lines really. Quite a few of these aircraft were used in the film "The Battle of Britain".

Offhand guess: that's a Merlin in there. With a desert air filter maybe? The film used Spanish (Merlin-powered?) versions of the Bf109; did it use any weird Spitfires?

tim_zukas Oh of course Tim, you're right. Demonstrates the frailty of memory! I think what threw me was the air filter - I've never seen a Spit with one fitted.
