As far as I know JG480 was sent to Canada for cold weather trials and was accepted on 21.3.1944. It was made an instructional airframe as A517 on 12.7.1946 and struck of charge by the RCAF on 1.8.1947. Where did it serve as a gate guard? Stig

The elliptic wing planform...actually a "double ellipse" was designed to minimise induced (lift dependent) drag; the skewing of the ellipse was to get the local wing centre of pressure onto the unswept main spar ... this being a good thing for the structural design. This was based on the work of the German aerodynamicist Ludwig Prandtl whose work was published in 1934 just in time to contrbute to the Spitfire....nice case of international collaboration eh?
