Here’s a selection of the conversations happening on these photos:

MILAZZA (LOC)

  • Ellie Baker said:
Despite the spelling on the image, this was of SS Milazzo, an Italian bulk-carrier/collier. It was the largest cargo ship in the world at the time of its launch. It arrived in New York on its maiden voyage on 1 July 1916, which is likely around the time the photos in this series were taken. (This exact image appeared in a profile of the ship in “Popular Science” in Sept. 1916.) The ship was short-lived, being sunk by an Austro-Hungarian U-Boat in the Mediterranean on 29 Aug. 1917.
  • Pete (LOC P&P) said:
Andy Baker: thanks for correcting the spelling and finding more information about the ship. We'll update the record.

She was great. The Italian steamer SS Milazzo, the largest cargo ship and the largest collier in the world at the time of her construction in 1916. She was sunk by Austro-Hungarian submarine U-14 in August 1917.
