"This picturesque house was built in 1834 and at the time of the Civil War was owned by the noted statesman Thaddeus Stevens. It was on July 1, 1863 that General Robert E. Lee established his personal headquarters in this old stone house. An ideal location, it was at the center and rear of his battle lines and it was on the same road that many more of his troops were quickly approaching."

William H. Tipton (photographer) (1850–1929) was a noted American photographer of the second half of the 19th Century, most noted for his extensive early photography of the Gettysburg Battlefield and the borough of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. [1] [2]

Robert E. Lee Headquarters, Gettsyburg – Then & Now:

Significant additions and renovations have been made over the years. These views appear to be of the side and (now) rear of the house. At the time of the battle the house was probably a duplex. [3]
