King Street during the plague clean up

    Looking up King Street towards the intersection of King and Sussex. Photograph taken near the corner of Day Street. Cable tram tracks would indicate the picture was taken before 1900. Google street view maps.google.com.au/maps?hl=en&tab=wl&q=King%20and... The rather grand building on the corner was a branch of the former Bank of New South Wales (now Westpac) The workmen seem to be doing something with the cable tram tracks (which can be seen in the right foreground). The cable tram terminated at Erskine Street, after turning into Day Street (as did the electric trams when introduced in 1902 or 1903 (?); this was the city end of the line servicing the eastern suburbs. This area now covered by the 'City North' exit of the Western Distributor.

What a great selection of pictures you supplied to support your argument, the picture of Kent Street is amazing and brought back many memories, I worked in one of the buildings shown (No 383) on the right (western) side in the 1970s and early 1980s - now its a car park! It had a wonderful lift dating back to 1900 or earlier all brass and wood, the gate had a most wonderful rattle. I think the lift-driver ("Taffie") was an original too!
