Mr. & Mrs. Shepard are attending a polo match at Meadow Brook Field. The Newport Cup, effectively the polo championship of the world, was played there on June 14, 1913. America defeated England. From the New York Times of the following day: " Mr. and Mrs. Finley J. Shepard (Miss Helen Gould) also paid their first visit to Meadow Brook. After they had run the gauntlet of cameras, they sat with Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Gould in a grandstand box. Mrs. Shepard wore a blue poplin dress topped with a blush straw hat which had a single red rose." I believe that the listing of society attendees will help to match up with other photographs taken on the same day.

He led the fight for adoption of the prohibition amendment to the Constitution and strongly supported women's suffrage. As a progressive Democrat, Sheppard advocated reform legislation promoting rural credit programs, child labor laws, and antitrust laws. Also among his list of accomplishments was the Sheppard-Towner Act, which provided for maternity and infant welfare, the Federal Credit Union Act, the Selective Service Act, and the Lend-Lease Act. Standing only five feet, four inches tall, he was a quiet man who was most effective behind the scenes rather than in active debate.
