Townsville City is a strip of land along the northern-eastern bank Ross Creek at its mouth at the Coral Sea, thus the suburb is bounded to the north by the Coral Sea and to the south-east by Ross Creek. It is overlooked to the west by Castle Hill. The land is mostly low-lying, just about sea level, apart from Melton Hill (19.2559°S 146.8189°E) which creates a natural boundary to North Ward to the north-west. Only a short drive from Brisbane are a patchwork of towns and villages in the hill country they like to call the hinterland. In early European days before air-conditioning, they offered a refreshing retreat from coastal heat for people used to more temperate climates. Their purpose was a bit like the hill stations of British India. Among the least-known to outsiders are two tiny settlements, so close to Brisbane they could easily have been swallowed by urban sprawl if not for a national park. The closest, on the edge of the rainforest is Mount Nebo. A bit higher and right in the rainforest centre, is the magnificently named Mount Glorious.
