Great old photo of the Salthill Station. I always thought they were taking the Mick as everybody knows there is only one Salthill and that is in Galway??? However coming to Dublin soon dispelled that notion. Wonderful Wiki tells us: Salthill and Monkstown railway station (Irish: Stáisiún Chnoc an tSalainn agus Baile na Manach) serves the areas of Salthill (on the coast) and Monkstown (just inland) in Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown, Ireland. It is situated in between Seapoint and Dun Laoghaire DART stations. The station has a car park, a ticket office, automated ticket machines and vending machines. The ticket office is open between 05:45-00:15 AM, Monday to Sunday. a And it was first opened in 1837!

I would say that the building in the background is (was) The Salthill Hotel. Designed by J.S. Mulvany for the Dublin & Kingstown Railway Co., around 1836 but not constructed until 1843. Extended in the 1860s by John McCurdy, who also added the mansard roof. Destroyed by fire in 1970 and demolished in 1972. Now the site of apartments. Violent Assault Klaxon Warning: contains a blood-covered gouge. Freeman's Journal, Tuesday, October 12, 1847

VIOLENT ASSAULT - A young man who gave his name as John Sharkey, and said he was a coal factor, residing in Cuffe-street, charged a person named Michael Breen with having assaulted him. It appears that the prisoner and his brother were standing (the previous night) at the railway station, at Salthill, when witness came up; the prisoner's brother and witness had some angry words, when witness went into a second class carriage to avoid further altercation; on arriving at the Westland-row station, the prisoner walked up to him and stabbed him twices with a small iron instrument, resembling a "gouge" - one blow was inflictedon the left temple, the other on the lower part of the cheek; the blow on the temple was particularly dangerous, and the medical man who dressed it said, if the wound had been a little higher up it would have killed complainant; the prisoner dropped the instrument, but he was at once seized and given into custody; the gouge was covered with blood. Mr Tyndall sent the prisoner for trial.

At the trial of Mr James G Mooney, reported in Freeman's on December 13, 1875, Mr Justice Fitzgerald stated in the course of his summing-up:

But still any person passing the Salthill station about half-past nine on a fine evening in June would see grouped about the station and seated on the walls ladies and gentlemen of the best classes enjoying the cool air of the evening

Could be Salthill.

There's a grand collection of masts at the end of the spit, but it doesn't appear to be any of Derrygimla, Crosshaven or Ballybunion.

There's something marked at Salthill that could be posts of some sort: maps.osi.ie/publicviewer/#V2,528134,723732,12,9 Somthing to do with the trams, maybe.

It doesn't necessarily have to be in Ireland - they were in Stolzenfels am Rhein the next year...
