  Mulatto, which has its roots in the word 'mule'--the sterile offspring of a male ass and a mare--is a horrible word, that is associated to people of color. No one should allow themselves to be call a mulatto.

  The title is from the original 1940's caption from the photographer. While 'Mulatto' is offensive to us, back then it was the everyday term for people of mixed race. Thank goodness we have progressed a little.

  I would say pre-war - pre Boer War that is! Built about 1885? Photo about 1898. From the blurb at the Persistent URL - "The cottage was the first home of Arthur Phillips where he started business as an analytical chemist and metalurgist in 1898. Part of his works is seen on the left hand side of the photo [?}. The house was at the corner of Sydney and Stevens streets, Willoughby."
