    beachcomber australia One of my colleagues in Library towers made the following comment about the general decoration. Overwhelming thing that struck me on first view was that the then residents were enthusiasts of orientalism, the Arts and Crafts movement and Art Nouveau design. The dado wallpaper with its use of dawn and dusk symbols looks to be directly influenced by the stylized flower forms of C.F.A Voysey’s work and Alphonse Mucha’s “Documents Décoratifs” . The chairs have been loosely and not that expertly covered in a Japanese style design of cranes, peonies and quince or cherry blossoms. The rugs look to be near eastern in design and the firescreen shows a kingfisher (I think), reeds and waterlilies, which I think are painted, rather than embroidered. The panel could be closely woven silk or panel in Chinese or Japanese style, if not origin.

Isn't it a cracker of a photograph with all the detail of the conditions at the time so we can compare with today (it wasn't raining cats and dogs for a start) Ladies with real fur's, men waving hats including at least one bowler, soldiers with drawn swords and fixed bayonets, the blue hussars on horseback and a Dublin Metropolitan Policeman with a bobby's style helmet. I love it and well done!

    Based on some of beachcomber australia's "see alsos", I think this is Scoil Mhuire in Derrybeg, Gweedore. There's a recording from the opening of the school on Youtube, which gives the date 4th April 1959 for the official opening by then Taoiseach Éamon de Valera.

    Gaeltacht Secondary School Opened And Blessed Historic Occasion In Derrybeg Ard Scoil Mhuire, Derrybeg, the first secondary school to qualify for a grant under the new scheme of Roinn na Gaeltachta to promote secondary school training in Irish speaking areas, was formally opened on Saturday by An Taoiseach, Mr. Eamon de Valera. The ceremony was attended by a large gathering of clergy and laity from the parishes of Gweedore, Annagry and Cloghaneely who came to mark an event of great significance in the development of Gaeltacht amenities. The school was blessed by his Lordship, Most Rev. Dr. McNeely, Bishop of Raphoe. The splendidly equipped college, was built and furnished at a cost of £11,000 and in honour of the occasion the building and grounds were decorated with bunting and flags. An Taoiseach, who was accompanied by his A.D.C, Lieut. Col. Sean Brennan, on arrival inspected a guard of honour of Gardai under Inspector J. Sheehan. Chief Supt. M. Walsh, Letterkenny, was represented by Supt. C. V. Convery, Milford...
