The peaceful elegance of the Place de la Concorde today belies the horrors of its violent and bloody past. During the French Revolution, King Louis XVI, Queen Marie Antoinette, Madame du Barry and countless others were guillotined on the site. During World War II, the Hôtel de Crillon (to the right of the Church of the Madeleine) served as headquarters of the German High Command.
