  Great image- but not all it appears! This projection is used to create a fantastic monocular 3D effect, which is well worth trying. Print the image full size, and place it on a flat surface. Close one eye and place the other above the 'D' in the bottom centre of the page. The distortion should then correct itself, and the building should suddenly snap into standard perspective projection. However, because your eye has to refocus on parts of the image which are (apparently and actually) further away, the image should appear to be 3D. Hope this was interesting, and hope it works for you!

  The only peak remotely like that in NZ is Mt Egmont/Taranaki, on the west coast of the North Island. What you see on the cliff top is a Maori "pa", a hill fort. That stockade would appear to be to keep people from falling over the edge, not for defensive purposes as such, though it would give a good impression to any passing sea canoes.
