In the second photo, depicting a woman and her children peeling onions, I notice that the children wore wooden shoes. This while it appears that this was a city or village; not farm country... My mother who was born in 1911, lived in the city of Schiedam. She told me that during her earlier years, most grade school students would wear wooden shoes during the week, and only, i.e. if they owned any, wore shoes on Sundays, I don't think she ever had to go to school in wooden shoes, though. I'm not sure.
