  "The American Olmstead" was Lieutenant Robert Sanford Olmstead of Vermont. He was flying with Lieutenant John W. Choptaw of Indiana. The men, both experienced army balloonists, were killed in this accident on Sunday, 23 Sep 1923 when their balloon was struck by lightning.
