Is this where the ice-skating rink ended up? I think Prince Albert Victor would have seen this in his 1881 visit.

Wonderful picture of a wonderful building from a wonderful album. I (again) spent several hours going through the album this came from. I can recommend to anyone who wants to time travel via an 1881 'slide night'. Great sport trying to guess what the view is before each page and title loads. Surprises and treasures await! acms.sl.nsw.gov.au/item/itemDetailPaged.aspx?itemID=836375 .

See www.hammondharwoodhouse.org/ and en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hammond-Harwood_House and hdl.loc.gov/loc.pnp/hhh.md0035 for more on the lower building, which still exists and is open to the public. hdl.loc.gov/loc.pnp/hhh.md0084 includes at least one photograph of the stables at Homewood -- the upper picture.

The Hammond Harwood House (bottom) is at 19 Maryland Ave in Annapolis. Lots of other gorgeous detail pictures of the house appear elsewhere in Flickr if you search by the name. From www.hometownannapolis.com/tour_hammond.html: "The Hammond-Harwood House is the architectural masterpiece of renowned designer and joiner, William Buckland. Built in 1774 for patriot Mathias Hammond, the house epitomizes the sophisticated lifestyle of colonial Annapolis. With its ornately carved mouldings, this house is considered the finest example of five-part Georgian architecture in colonial America, featuring formal rooms with mid 18th and early 19th century furnishings and fine arts. The fine collections include portraits by the Peale family. A public museum since 1926, the Hammond-Harwood House Association maintains the house and grounds."

Thank you swanq for your identification of the Hammond-Harwood House and the Homewood stables cyanotypes by Thomas Smillie! We would also like to thank canaan_1977 for the background information on the Hammond-Harwood House! We especially appreciate the weblinks included in your comments. Your efforts have made these images more accessible and useable, which are goals shared by both Flickr and the Smithsonian.
