This is actually the New Gaol, built between 1836 and 1847 during the 2nd Settlement of Norfolk Island. The buildings in front are the Civil Hospital-Surgeons Quarters and the tall building at the back was the Prisoners Barracks.

trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/163330923 - I suspect this pic was used for the sketch that appeared in the Sydney Mail on 23rd June, 1894...see sketch titled 'The Gaol, from Flagstaff Hill.'

Please explain the connection to my image. Unfortunately my internet is so abysmally slow the links above won't currently load. Thanks

Thanks just got to be able to view those links. OK so you are suggesting the image above is incorrectly titled and should be Norfolk Island Civil Hospital. I cannot recall the buildings or lay of the land well enough to be able to confirm your thoughts.

Just had a look through those State Library Pics. The Norfolk Island Pine boulevard in one of the pics could also suggest Norfolk Island. It existed before the US Military removed them to construct an airport during WWll. There is also another pic of cliffs which appears to be Cascade Bay where the whaling station was.

[https://www.flickr.com/photos/51979177@N02] Bingo! The Civil Hospital it is, or was. See the "c.1900" SLNSW (!) photo on the first page of this report. Mr Macpherson was standing bottom left corner and the one/two-chimney house is on the right. Pyramid roof is there. See also what they found in the privy ! - www.ashadocs.org/aha/19/19_04_Starr.pdf Edit - Here is the image in the SLNSW - archival.sl.nsw.gov.au/Details/archive/110197963 - not as clear as the link above.
