this is amazing... most women weren't taking photographs at that time. and the female artists that were working vered closer towards "happy" images of women/motherhood.

Apparently, the woman is Agnes Lee (who appears with her daughter, Peggy, in Kasebier's well known photograph "Blessed Art Thou Among Women"). The Heritage of Motherhood was, according to Judith Barter (Apostles of Beauty, New Haven, 2009) taken right after Peggy's death and shows the mother grieving for her daughter.
