Looks like it was taken from the Silos and the approaches look clean and uncluttered which suggests a date c1921 when the silo opened.

This is White Bay power station. Not Balmain Power Station.

The building to the left of the power station is the White Bay Hotel, quite recently demolished. The street going up the hill behind it is Hornsey Street. Victoria Road, then called Weston Road, runs up the hill but I can't actually see it anywhere in the photo.

I think the two buildings to the right of the last chimney, is the former catholic church at the top of Gordon Street. The large staggered building on the skyline was a cinema, which was later a wedding reception venue, on the corner of red lion street. You can also see St Thomas' anglican church. The two other visible towers are a mystery, I don't know what they are.

I'd work on the hat.

The key to dating would probably be the cars. The older ones look like late 1920's type to me, the new one in the middle late 30's. I don't see any early to mid 30's style models. I will suggest 1938.

SWEET – not only the cars but, way down the road, two people in a sulky. Back to the cars: at least six late 1920s [proper vintage] vehicles, Car 3 - the touring car in the centre is most likely a 1928 Oldsmobile, behind it, Car 2- possibly a Buick (but could be one of several other US origin c.1927-1928 tourers), and peaking out beside the truck I would say is a 1927/28 Chev. But as we need the most recent date in the 1930s cars we have, photo left to right: Car 1: lattice style bonnet inset and curve of the radiator shell says 1935 Ford to me; Car 4: 1936/37 style ‘teardrop’ mudguards, headlights external to muduards - might be 1937 Dodge, 1937 Chev, 1936 Ford, 1936 Hudson, 1936 Olds, 1936/37 Pontiac, 1936 Studebaker – the style of the car in the photo is just typically mid 1930s; Cars 5 & 6: seem to have more rounded/drooping bonnet fronts – if the mudguards were less full I would have said Chrysler Airflow 1934-36 but the rounded front and full teardrop guards could indicate maybe a 1936-37 Hupmobile. I’ll suggest - no cars later than 1937. Still it could be a street of not very new cars!!

The second building along is still there.
