Many of the people are looking at the camera - the photographer must have yelled out "CHEESE !". Late 1930s?

The tunnels continued and curved around the right of the Conservatorium before heading for Circular Quay. Circular Quay station was not completed until 1954, so the tunnels lay idle for over 20 years. Parts of the tunnels were used as air raid shelters during WWII. When the Conservatorium of Music (University of Sydney) and the Conservatorium High School were significantly extended in the late 1990's, the double-barrel concrete vaults of the railway tunnels were fully exposed.
