    map dates from shortly after the Canadian National Railways takeover of the Canadian Northern Railway which was the southern most rail line through Belleville. A bit of mapping licence taken showing that CNoR line much south of the CPR line when they ran together through Belleville.

    On the 1st of January 1901, the Commonwealth of Australia was created. The majority of Queenslanders had voted ‘yes’ in a referendum asking if Queensland should join the Federation.     James Forsyth Thallon, Commissioner of Railways. Thallon was born in Scotland in 1847 and moved to Queensland as a young man for health reasons. He joined the railways and worked his way up. He became Commissioner in 1902 and led Queensland Railways through a period of rapid expansion. He was a strong supporter of Queensland’s narrow gauge which he said was appropriate for a “young country”. A popular manager, and his staff were devastated when he died in office in 1911 of dengue fever and they launched a subscription to erect this monument a year later.
