"When the Dublin-Cork railway was being built in the middle of the 19th century the contemporary Lord Hawarden gave the company 22 miles of free passage through his lands as a result of which the railway line went to Cork via Dundrum and Limerick Junction rather than through Cashel and Mitchelstown. The pay-off for the landlord of Dundrum was a private waiting-room at Dundrum Station and a warning bell in Dundrum House when the train left Gouldscross travelling south or Limerick Junction when travelling north." This station opened in 1848 - Cornwallis Maude, 3rd Viscount Hawarden was the local Lord at the time. His son was also Cornwallis Maude and was the 4th Viscount Hawarden from 1856, the 4th Baron de Montalt of Hawarden and the 6th baronet Maude. He was created 1st Earl de Montalt of Dundrum in 1886. On his death in 1905 the titles became extinct, so this was not the waiting room of a Lord when O'Dea took the picture, more of a historical note. Edit: I tell a lie - the Earldom became extinct (as his son died in 1881 in the first Boer war) but his cousin Robert Henry Maude inherited his other titles. The house and estate were bought by the Land Commission. The 6th Viscount (also Robert) was killed in action in 1914. The title is now held by Robert Connan Wyndham Leslie Maude, 9th Viscount Hawarden. The station closed in 1976.

The Earl's wife (per wikipedia) was a noted photographer: Lady Clementina Hawarden (1822-1865) was a respected photographer of her time; and some of her early work took place on the family estate at Dundrum and is now part of the collections of the Victoria and Albert museum in London. A Google image search finds many of her photos.

Niall McAuley The earlier title was "reverted" so there was a Baronet Maude in 1961. However, Dundrum House had long been an Industrial School by that point (and is now a hotel) so it still wasn't a Lord's waiting room in 1961.
