I wonder what they fed it, since koalas live off of eucalyptus leaves, which probably wouldn't be available in a war zone.

I imagine that this photo was taken in Australia. Koalas are high maintenance animals if kept in captivity in Australia, let alone overseas!

You can see over on the right there that this photo was taken in Broadmeadows, Melbourne, Australia.

A few koalas did make it overseas as mascots. I have often wondered about their food, but eucalyptus tres do exist outside Australia so perhaps they were of the right type. if they took eucalyptus leaves with them on the ship transporting them, they must have been pretty dry by the time they got over there.

I've always wondered. Do people in Australia find the koalas as cute as those of us outside Australia, or are they an nuisance?
  • Jazz Guy said:
Oh, given the time frame. Do you think this bear was made from real koala fur?
  • State Library of New South Wales said:
No the koala is not a nuiisance but is nuiisanced by feral dogs and people. These souvenirs used to be made from kangaroo skin

That's much better! I ate some kangaroo meat at an "Australian" bar in Huntsville, Alabama many years back and had a kangaroo burger in Liverpool, England just a couple of years ago at a food fair. Delicious!!!

On the clicker press, top left, the operator appears to be stamping out the small, koala noses from black leather. See a clicker press in closeup here - flic.kr/p/2kt9EwM The patterns are being cut from kangaroo hides laid out on the trestle tables; and stitched by the women on the Singer industrial sewing machines on the central bench.
