My Uncle and aunt's farm grew tobacco in Texas back in the 1970s. I remember when the shearers used to camp there every year, too.

One can travel around the NSW-Queensland border and take for granted many relics of bygone days. From Ashford through to Inglewood there are many old tobacco barns made of logs and some later designs made of concrete blocks. In Inglewood there is tobacco farming/industry museum. The town of Texas is situated in Queensland, on the banks of the Dumaresq River, on the border with Nw South Wales, in the Darling Downs region. The rich, alluvial river flats around the river encouraged farmers to plant crops, one of the earliest being corn. By the late 1860s, Chinese people were being employed to grow tobacco. In the 1880s, the Greenup bros. were growing tobacco called "Texas Gold Bar" and Stanley McMaster of Runnymede began using Chinese laborers to grow tobacco, operating on the shared system. The tobacco of this time was all sun or air-cured. By the turn of the century, a tobacco factory was erected in Texas. The output of tobacco declined in the 1920s, but increased dramatically in the 1930s, because of the rapid rise in import duty on tobacco leaf. In 1908, Texas Station had 200 acres of tobacco leased to Chinese farmers. The station built the sheds and looked after the sales, while the share farmer paid one-third of the profit for the use of the land. European, growers, however, gradually took over from the Chinese and became an important part of the area's economy for many years, until 1960s. Link hostile entry in the NIAH says: Description: In level pasture, on the SW outskirts of Kenmare town and centrally placed within a multiple-stone circle (KE093-032001-). A rounded boulder with a flattish top (2.1m x 1.8m; T 0.8m) rests above three support-stones, which form a small chamber-like arrangement open at E. Support-stones are of rather similar dimensions, averaging 0.9m x 0.6m and 0.2m H. The boulder rests directly on the stones at N and S, and on a small pad-stone above the support-stone at W. There is a small cupmark on the upper surface of the boulder. (Ó Nualláin 1978, 96, no. 36)
