In the 1901 census, we have Mary Sheehan of the Drapery on the left of shot. She's still there in 1911.

I'm not to surprised that this image drew little reaction when it was last posted as in my view it is possibly the work of a photographer in training or an amateur, as it contains many basic flaws in its composition. The goat has it's back to the camera, other than the scaffolding which Puck is standing on there is little foreground detail other than two children shading their eyes from a very bright sun which is lighting the left hand side of the street while the right hand side is partly in shade and a market stall obscures a lot of the detail in the lower left hand side while the banners going to the tower should be read from the other side. Shooting from the other side of the tower would have made a much better picture and a more experienced photographer would have waited until the sun was at a different angle and taken the shot from further down the street. An Ideal location would have been placing the camera on a window sill on one of the buildings further down the street. Why a window sill? plate cameras of the type used at this time were heavy bulky and usually mounted on a wooden tripod, film speeds were slow and even in bright sunlight as in this image shutter speeds could be down to about 1/10 (one tenth) of a second which would make it impossible to hand hold the camera also focusing and viewing was done on the back of the camera (no viewfinder) under a black cloth. This shot would be the type of test that an apprentice would be sent out to photograph to see what they would return with, so as their employer could evaluate their camera craft. On reflection, I think what we are looking at here is an apprentice's work piece, simular to furniture makers apprentices making miniature pieces, FYI I have worked as a photographer for 25 years mostly shooting B&W, still shooting but in a non professional capacity.

Further down on the left, Daniel Hayes, baker. Still listed as a baker in 1911, although he's 76 by then, Holy crap! In 1911 his wife Ellen is shown as having 15 children born, 4 living! She would have been born in 1841, and married in 1863 aged 22.

From today on we will revert to just the one shot per day. What we will do from time to time in the future is run a theme. If any of our regular Flickroonies would like to suggest a favourite subject then we will do our best to oblige subject to availability of suitable material of course! Mary

NIAH entry on the viaduct.

January 24 1960 was a Sunday. Probably unknown to the owner of the Pinto --- on that very same day In Japan The Democratic Socialist Party was formed by Nishio Suehiro and 52 other members of Parliament who had formerly been in the Japan Socialist Party. The DSP lasted until 1994.

The viaduct formed part of the Great South and western Railway's route that ran from Farranfore to Valentia Harbour. The railway closed on 1st February 1960 and was officially wound up 5 months later. Today, the bridge is open for use as a footpath. There has been talk recently of re-opening this railway as a single track line to Caherciveen along the north section of the Ring of Kerry due to the spectacular scenery along that route.http://www.geograph.ie/photo/3208537 Five-span rock-hewn limestone-built railway viaduct over river, opened 1885, comprising single-arch sections to east and to west with limestone and red brick voussoirs and three-span section to centre with bow-string cast-iron girders on tapered limestone piers.
